MILITARY TRANSFORMATION OF MODERN STAGE OF ARTSAKH (NAGORNO-KARABAKH) CONFLICT

The authors analyze the problems of transformation of the latest stage of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict since the collapse of the Soviet Union. They tend to divide the development of the conflict into three main stages.

The first period refers to the Karabakh war of 1991-1994. After the collapse of the USSR, Armenia and Azerbaijan conducted fierce hostilities in . It is generally accepted that this period refers to asymmetric military operations. The regular army of Azerbaijan was opposed by the Armenian irregular armed forces.

Following the 1994 peace agreement, the parties to the conflict negotiated thanks to the efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group. At the same time, the construction and modernization of the armed forces was proceeding at full speed in Armenia and Azerbaijan.

The April 2016 armed escalation brought hybrid warfare into conflict. Following the classical tactics of blitzkrieg the attacking party applied all kinds of armed forces. Another important component of this war was an information war both in the press and in social networks. Тhe clashes did not result in significant changes.

Till today the Artsakh conflict will remain one of the most complex conflicts for a settlement.
